Arashiyama, a nationally designated Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty is
a district on the western outskirts of Kyoto, Japan. There are many temples
and notable sites relating to history and literature, including Tenryuji Temple,
which is the headline attraction in Arashiyama, a sprawling Zen temple with
one of the finest gardens in Kyoto and wonderful mountain views. It is one of
the best examples of shakkei (borrowed scenery) in Japan: the steep
mountains of Arashiyama are perfectly incorporated into the design of the
garden.
