Marty Haviik: Well, alright! Thank you, guys, for this opportunity.
I’ve been wanting to work with the band on this interview for
several years now and it seems my schedule would never let me.
I’m somewhat of a music troll so I usually get my new bands
from social media. I first saw you guys on YouTube a few years
ago. I think it was a Pier performance and that’s where I fell in
love with Liliac. Tell me a little about the band and also how you
all got started?
Liliac: Our father is a music producer, and we grew up around music
because of him. He gave us instruments to learn, took us to music
lessons and the Santa Monica pier, where we would perform in front
of large crowds.
MH: What dies Liliac mean and who came up with the name?
Liliac: ‘Liliac’ in Romanian means ‘bat’ -- like a vampire bat. We used
to be called ‘The Cristeas,’ which is our last name. We wanted to
change it because our music was getting heavier. One day, we were
at the music store talking to the manager, gossiping about how Ozzy
Osborne bit the head of a bat and we asked our dad, ‘How do you
say bat in Romanian?’ He replied, ‘Liliac.’ We thought it was the most
perfect name for our band!
MH: Me, also being an L.A. boy, I still remember how tough it
was competing with other bands in L.A./Hollywood back in the
'80s. How difficult has it been for the band to showcase your
talent/music now? Even more so during the pandemic.
Liliac: Well, the music industry has changed a lot since the 80s. We
feel like there isn't that much of a competition because of the fact that
we're a family doing rock music. You don't really see that nowadays.
However, it's definitely difficult because we aren't able to have shows
due to the pandemic…which is highly crucial for our music career.
