Dennis originally recorded the song "I Love You More
When You're Not At Home" as a solo. But after making
a connection with Canadian artist Peggie Nora, they
got together and remade the song as a duet. It is one
of the standout tracks on this project and deals with
the age-old issue of a married couple drifting apart
over time. They find that, over time, it just becomes
easier to still love each other when they are not
together.
"Smack Dab" is a song originally recorded by George
Jones. The song was co-written by T.W. Hale, who is
a friend of Dennis and brought the song to him thinking
it would be a perfect fit for his voice. It's just a fun
novelty song. The steel guitar player on Dennis'
version (Scotty Sanders), also played on the original
version that Jones recorded.
"I Never Gave Up" is a song that Dennis co-wrote with
Larry Simpson. Dennis recorded the song as a tribute
to his friend Larry, who sadly passed away last year.
He says the song is all about Larry and how he never
gave in to the struggles that life threw his way.
"Red Creek Expedition" is a song Dennis co-wrote
with Scott Southworth, who is also a successful singer
and songwriter in country music. It's another fun and
toe tapping song about having fun (maybe too much
fun) in the great outdoors.
Perhaps the most poignant song on this project is
called "The Pen Won't Lie.” It looks at songwriting from
the songwriter's aspect as sometimes a writer may
discover that he has gotten a little too close to his own
life in the words. No matter what, the truth will always
come out in the words.
