Based out of Columbus, Ohio, indie rock band The Out, is comprised of local
musicians Ace Mayes (guitar, vocals), Adam Anderson (drums, vocals), Bob Ward
(base, vocals), and Tim Campbell (guitar, keys, vocals).

Separately, these talented musicians have been familiar faces in the music scene in
Ohio, playing with various bands on stages at area venues and opening for national
touring acts. They have joined forces to create high-energy, driving music that is
infused with punk vibes and classic rock sounds. This summer they will be releasing
their debut album “No Simple Landing.” Here is my interview with The Out.

Kiki Plesha: Let’s start at the beginning…how/when was The Out formed?

Ace: The Out originally started as an idea for a project in around 2008. I was really
inspired by the indie rock scene coming out of Europe at the time. I wanted to start a
band that explored that but kept roots in classic rock and blues but could still stand
alongside punk as well. I began writing songs and playing with a lot of different
musicians, just trying to find the right combination, sound, and chemistry and it was
tough. It wasn’t until around 2015 that I was asking around about drummers, and Tim,
who was playing in a band called Street Meat at the time, introduced me to Adam. We
jammed a few times, and even recorded an EP with two other guys. That started to
get a little traction with the local radio station, and then another set-back. The day of
the EP release party, our guitarist said he was leaving the band. Still wanting to move
forward with the project, I reached out to Tim again, looking for a guitarist, and he
joined us. Shortly after, our bassist left the band, and Tim moved to bass. We spent
the next few years writing and playing some really great shows and then we when we
were recording ‘No Simple Landing,’ we decided we needed to bring in a fourth
member to round out the sound, and so we could perform these songs on stage. Bob
joined us on bass at the end of 2019, and now it feels like a band.

Adam: I was brought in after the band was formed in 2016. Ace is the only original
member that remains, but the band has changed significantly since its formation. This
incarnation of the band has existed since about 2017.

Tim: The Out has been Ace’s baby for a long time. As long as I have known him, he
has been trying to get this project off the ground. I was a huge fan of his showmanship
and songwriting and flirted with the idea of joining forces with him for a long time. The
timing was never right until 2017. I had just left my band and a job at a recording
studio. I purchased The Out’s debut EP at their release show and heard the rumblings
that they were losing their guitarist. As I drove home, I kept listening to the EP and
thinking of the cool things I could do with these songs. I guess I still had on my
producer hat. Before Ace had a chance to reach out about the position, I had already
learned all the guitar parts to the EP.
