Because of COVID protocol, there was no
opening act. Mammoth WVH started right
at 8 PM sharp. Most of the crowd wore Van
Halen T-shirts and came from around the
country (after speaking to a few fans).
Although Wolf sang and played every
instrument on the album himself, on the
road, you can't duplicate the soul of an
album. So, he found himself some really
pro musicians to make these songs come
alive. Mammoth WVH musicians include
Jon Jourdan on guitars and backing
vocals, Frank Sidoris on guitars, Garrett
Whitlock on drums, and Ronnie Ficarro on
bass.
It was the first chance for me and Tucson
to see Mammoth WVH in person. Just so
you know, Mammoth WVH did not perform
any Van Halen songs. Mammoth WVH
opened the show with a fiery version of
"Don't Back Down” followed by 13 songs,
all from his newly released album. My
favorite is “Distance,” a tribute to his late
father Eddie Van Halen. After a few songs
like "Mammoth" and "Mr. Ed,” where
Wolfgang did a little guitar tapping skill
showing off (not sure where he picked that
up) and after nearly 75 minutes, the show
ended with two encore tunes. “Distance”
and “Epiphany.” Although Mammoth WVH
has a distinct sound, I will keep my opinion
to myself and let you make your own
decision on what they sound like. So, go
out and get their album and check them
out when they visit your city.
