Summerfest is operated by Milwaukee World Festival, Inc., a non-profit
organization which is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Since 2004,
Don Smiley has served as Summerfest President and Chief Executive Officer.

Summerfest has an impressive history hosting a variety of well-known artists,
including Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Metallica, Whitney

Houston, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Chesney, Aerosmith, Bruno Mars, Lady
Gaga, and Dave Matthews Band.

Summerfest was an inspired vision similar to Munich, Germany’s Oktoberfest,
with the original proposed name being "Milwaukee World Festival." Later, in

1966, this was briefly changed to "Juli Spaß," which is German for "July Fun,"
and then to the now known famous "Summerfest.” The first official Summerfest
was held in 1968 at 35 different locations throughout the city,
including Milwaukee County Stadium and Milwaukee Arena. That sure sounds
like a lot of walking!

This year, hundreds of artists and bands entertained the people from

Milwaukee and visitors who converged on the popular music fest from all
around the world. On the 12 stages set up around the festival, some of the acts
included Lamb of God, Jason Aldean, Lil Wayne Wiz Khalifa, Chevelle,
Disturbed, Rod Stewart, Avril Lavigne, For King and Country, Jocelyn & Chris,
KC and the Sunshine Band, The Breeders, War, Indigo Girls, and many

ION Indie Magazine appreciates all the hard work of all the behind-the-scenes
Summerfest staff that make this monster of a machine move. Next year, when

Summerfest comes around again, I just may just raise my hand and buy me a
plane ticket…and 11 pairs of walking shoes.
