CREATING STANDARD EQUIVALENCIES
WHAT IS IT
A standard equivalency is a transfer course that has been approved to be articulated for all students taking that
transfer course and is determined to be a specific Kent State course in the current Kent State Catalog. These can be
seen in our Transfer Credit Guide at www.kent.edu/transferguide.
WHO IS IT FOR
Transfer students only. This does not involve making equivalencies for Kent State-to-Kent State courses. Kent State
courses that are cross-listed must be approved through the Curriculum Services office.
WHO APPROVES IT
The Dean of the college that owns the course, or a faculty member who has been designated to approve equivalencies
within the department for that course. (i.e. MIS courses are evaluated by the College of Business, Math courses are
evaluated by the College of Arts and Sciences or the Math Department.)
HOW IS IT SUBMITTED
If the review of the course is the result of a GPS exception, then check it as a ‘Standard Equivalent’ on the workflow.
If the review of the course is a result of a proactive inquiry about a potential course, or part of another project/review,
then it is acceptable to send the approval to creditreview@kent.edu with all documents or associated emails attached.
The Credit Transfer office will then have the transfer guide updated accordingly at www.kent.edu/transferguide.
SPECIAL NOTES
Once the course is approved to be a standard equivalency and is updated within the transfer tables, no further GPS
exceptions will be needed for future student evaluations. Determining a standard equivalency can benefit future
transfer admits as well as students wanting to take the course as transient work. It can also be used for articulation
agreements and pathways between institutions. Once reviewed, an attribute of “RVWD” will show on the guide.
Just because a course is not listed as standard equivalent does not exclude it from being transferrable. Courses that
are not equivalent are given pseudo course numbers, such as MATH 1X000. These pseudo courses can also be given
attributes to allow them to count as Kent Core courses even if they are not equivalent to a Kent Core Course number.
For example, a course with a KSS attribute will satisfy the Kent Core Social Science. Please do not use special topics
course numbers for equivalencies, as those courses can vary from term to term in our own catalog.
Please note that transferability of credit does not determine applicability of courses to a student’s major program.
Program applicability is overseen by the college of the program, not the Credit Transfer Office.
