ALTERNATIVE CREDITS

Credits can also be earned from programs, exams, and non-course sources. Kent State University accepts and
evaluates a wide variety of credentials for college level credits. This includes, but is not limited to:
        TESTING CREDITS

        At Kent State:
            • CBE: Credit by Exam at Kent State (https://www.kent.edu/registrar/credit-exam)
            • CLEP: College Level Examination Program (https://www.kent.edu/engagement/testing)

        Other testing credits:
            • ACTFL: American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages
            • DSST: DANTES Subject Standardized Test
            • DLPT: Defense Language Placement Test
            • NOCTI: National Occupational Competency Testing Institute
        CERTIFICATE CREDITS

Some Industry recognized certificates are eligible for credits. If you are unsure that a certificate has already been
reviewed for credits, you can contact the Credit Transfer Office to see if a certificate review has been done. Certificates
are initially verified via the “ODHE Approved Third Party Credential List” which is located on the webpage
https://www.ohiohighered.org/certificates-and-credentials. Once the certificate has been verified to have the criteria
required, it is then submitted for review by the appropriate Kent State faculty or review board.
        ADDITIONAL AREAS OF CREDITS
Block Credits: Some programs may offer a block of credits for a verified industry credential. These have been reviewed
and submitted for standard equivalency to the Credit Transfer Office.

Bridge Courses: NRST10006, NRST10008,PTST10010 are the only official bridge courses in current programs at Kent
State. Passing a bridge course at the appropriate minimum grade demonstrates proficiency and allows that student to
receive credits for pre-approved lower level courses.

DD214: Students who submit a DD214 can receive up to 3 credits of Physical Education credits for basic training. A
student can only receive credits for a DD214 in the absence of a Military Joint Services Transcript.

Military Courses and Occupations: Credits can be earned from Military coursework and occupations upon submission
of the Joint Services transcript (JST). The JST can be ordered by military persons by logging into
https://jst.doded.mil/official.html. Credit recommendations for the JST are provided by ACE.
Note: The Community College of the Air Force is a regionally accredited institution and is treated as such.

Retroactive Credit: Students can retroactively earn lower level credits by passing an advanced level Kent State course
with the appropriate minimum grade. (https://www.kent.edu/registrar/retroactive-credit)

Please note that transferability of credit does not determine applicability of courses to a student’s major program.
Program applicability is overseen by the college of the program, not the Credit Transfer Office.
