Finisher Lesson 3: S.M.A.R.T Goals / Family Goals
(Goal Setting Parts 1-7)
Classroom
Introduction Story:
Use your personal story of setting goals that were not S.M.A.R.T. (i.e. I want to lose weight) and how
they have proven to be ineffective. Share with the class the intent of the Finisher Goal Setting – to help
them establish goals which are effective and will set them up to follow through and be successful in
achieving their goals.
S.M.A.R.T. Goal Example
Write a S.M.A.R.T. goal on the board for the class to see. Examples would be:
• I will spend one hour with each of my family members over the course of the next week to
deepen our relationship. (Your timeframe may need to be expanded if you are part of a large
family).
• I will intentionally say something positive to each of my family members over the course of
the next week in an effort encourage them.
Introduction:
Play Video #8 “Finisher Program” to Review Goal Setting
Review Key Words and Phrases
• What is a goal?
• Four types of goals
• S.M.A.R.T. goals
Walk through several examples of S.M.A.R.T. goals with the class. Use the examples in the workbook to
help them better understand each component of the model. Ask for volunteers and work through the
formation of a S.M.A.R.T. goal as a class.
Introduce Family Goals
Share a personal story, or an example, of a Family Goal. Remember to tie the example back to the four
types of goals and well as the S.M.A.R.T. goal model.
