MISSION STATEMENT: PART 3
YOUR MISSION
FAMILY VALUES
Welcome to Mission Statement Part 3
of the TOPUCU Finisher Program. Today
we will begin the process of creating
your PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT.
Admittedly it sounds like a big task, but we
are going to break it down piece-by piece
and walk through it step by step. We’ll use
the statement you constructed in Mission
Statement Part 1 and the people of influence
from Mission Statement Part 2 as reference.
WHAT IS A MISSION STATEMENT?
A mission statement is a set of sentences and
phrases that focuses on who you want to be
and how you want to live your life. It serves
as a foundation and acts as a filter for all the
decisions you make. It reflects your overall
values, goals, purposes and modus operandi.
All successful people and companies have
mission statements. It can be a single
concise sentence like this one that Google
uses: “To organize the world’s information
and make it universally accessible and useful.”
Or it could be a longer, more detailed
statement like the following:
"By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the
process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future
in good hands – your own." — Mark Victor Hansen

“Mattel makes a difference in the global
community by effectively serving children
in need. Partnering with charitable
organizations dedicated to directly serving
children, Mattel creates joy through the
Mattel Children’s Foundation, product
donations, grant making and the work of
employee volunteers. We also enrich the
lives of Mattel employees by identifying
diverse volunteer opportunities and
supporting their personal contributions
through the matching gifts program.”

The process of creating a mission statement
is illuminating in and of itself. It forces you
to sit down and clarify each specific aspect
of your life and create a measuring stick for
your success.
FAMILY VALUES
Today we are going to spend some time
working on your personal mission statement
as it pertains to your FAMILY LIFE. The
following exercises will help you consider
many aspects and point you in the direction
of writing different ideas that can be a part
of your overall personal mission statement.
By the end of this exercise you should have
3 to 4 paragraphs.
1. Write about the roles you fill in your family.
Are you a husband, a wife, a mother, a
father, a sibling, a son, a daughter, a
grandparent, a grandchild, etc.? Which
one or two of these roles do you feel is
the most important to you? NOTE: Some
people have friends who they consider to
be family. Feel free to include “Friend” as a
role if you see fit.

2. What words would you use to describe
who you are to your family? Are you a
provider? Are you a caretaker? Are you
responsible for keeping the home clean?
Are you a mentor or teacher? Are you a
counselor? Are you the family’s comic
relief? Are you the one that organizes big
family events? Are you the one that keeps
everyone connected? Which of these roles
do you take the most pride in?

3. Think about your summary statement from
Part 1. How can you apply that statement
to your family life?
4. What positive contributions have you
made to your family over the years and
how have you positively affected members
of your family? What other positive effects
would you like to have on your family?
REMINDER: As you write, do not get stuck
on editing and grammar or whether it

write and encourage you to extract the
most meaningful things you have written
and build a concise and powerful mission
statement for your life.
Don’t take any short cuts and don’t skip this
step. Remember, when you begin something
and don’t follow through, “The Only Person
U Cheat Is U!”
