EARLY ASSIGNMENTS (CHARLIE Y.)
Joe W assigned Dr. Chai-Shang-Y (Charlie Y) to watch
over me and see what I could do. Charlie was an expert in
the world of metal fatigue behavior. He was also
meticulous in the planning, execution, and reporting of
experimental work. One more attribute of Charlie was his
intense ability to be pleasant, humble, gracious, patient
while demanding performance excellence no matter the
task. He expected no less from me as he expected from
himself. A few things stand out under his tutelage, such
as:
1. Never initiate experimental work without
understanding the scope of work, specifics of the planned
procedures, the accuracy required to make solid decisions
from the data generated, and how the work was to be
reported.
2. When examining the results of experimental work,
turn over every rock to make sure the data analysis can
explain every single anomaly (and I found that anomalies
always existed in experimental work).
