It was another day of perfect conditions for that sport: flat water,
little tide, gentle breezes and glorious scenery. Floating beside us
again were bergie bits and even three formations that might have
qualified as icebergs. The shore in this area was covered with
chunky blocks of stone piled atop one another but much lower
than the cliffs where we had just walked. They appeared to have
been carefully “cut” for use in construction. John (the geologist)
told us they were the same material as the cliffs but that erosion
(mostly caused by ice action) had ground them down into their
present shapes.
When we looked further out towards the open sea and the pack
ice beyond the cove, there were ice peaks rising above the horizon
which looked like magical medieval cities of glass and silver,
