Hippos are really numerous in the Chongwe and the Zambezi and we
were happy to be in a motor-powered larger boat since hippos are
known to turn smaller vessels over and more people in Africa are killed
by hippos than another other of the resident animals. And certainly,
hippos, large and small, were all around us in both rivers. They made
their rude noises constantly, flapped their ears, yawned so we could see
their huge teeth, and even jostled among themselves for positions in
the rivers. They were amusing to watch from the relative safety of our
boat.
