A few days later, Richard
and I hitchhiked to Turner
Field in Albany, Georgia.
It took only took four
rides and six hours to
travel the distance of
nearly 200 miles. We
went to Base Operations
and learned we both
missed a plane that was
going to Barksdale Air
Force Base in Shreveport,
Louisiana. We had to wait
until the next day for a
plane that was going
Bergstrom Air Force
Base in Austin, Texas.
We ate a good meal at the
base (hamburger,
potatoes, huckleberry pie
and ice cream), then rode
the bus into town where Richard went to a movie, and I went to prayer meeting at the
First Baptist to tell a few of my friends about my assignment in Alaska. The next
morning we boarded a C-47 and had a very bumpy flight that lasted about 4 hours.
After riding into town and eating a veal cutlet dinner, we caught a bus to Dallas where
I spent the night with Richard at Hensley Field.
The next morning I caught a flight to Oklahoma City and then hitchhiked to Stillwater.
I talked with a friend who told me his landlady had a vacant apartment. He said she
would not charge me, but when I left I thanked her and gave her 20 dollars. I got to see
a lot of my friends who were back from their summer break. When I told them I would
be leaving for an assignment in Alaska, they had a nice party for me the next evening.
On Wednesday, a bunch of us went to prayer meeting after the 6 PM vespers at the
BSU. The following days, I helped the kids prepare for the annual BSU carnival. They
asked me to go singing with them for the old people on Sunday, telling me that they had
