We were waiting for our first home to be built off Soutel Drive in Parkview Estates,
closer to my work at the airport. Our home had three bedrooms and a large picture
window in the living room that gave us a sweeping view of Lansdell and Altamont
Drives. The homes were built on the south side of a large sand hill that stretched almost
a mile eastward to Lem Turner Road and Henry Kite Elementary School. Our boys,
Frankie and Steve would climb to the top of the hill where we could see the skyscrapers
in downtown Jacksonville six miles away. The downward sloping road was perfect for
coasting in a wagon all the way down to the intersection.
One day, we looked out our picture window and saw our blue and white 1956
Customline Ford car roll backward down our driveway and across Lansdell Drive into
our neighbor’s driveway. Dashing outside, we saw that Frankie sitting behind the
steering wheel. He had pushed the gear shift into neutral, allowing the car to roll away
from our house.
