In the second rubber, Carla Suarez Navarro beat Misaki Doi 6-3 6-4 to put Spain in control, asthe hosts took an unexpected 2-0 lead in the tie at the end of the first day.
On the second day, Carla Suarez Navarro faced 137th-ranked Kurumi Nara, instead of world No. 10 Naomi Osaka. She secured a comfortable victory, winning 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets, to give the hosts to their third consecutive win in the best-of-five fixture.
The victory sent fifth-seeded Spain into last April's Federation Cup finals in Budapest, leaving Japan needing to win a playoff for the right to participate in next year'squalifiers.
