“When all the tankers have been delivered – each resplendent in
Conoco/Jet livery – they will form two trains of 15 tankers, each with a
capacity of 1000 tons of products which equals 300,000 gallons. Three
tankers for each train will be held in reserve.
“The first train will roll from Conoco’s Humber Refinery to the Kingsbury
terminal of Warwickshire Oil Storage Ltd. The terminal services a chain
of Conoco/Jet filling stations in the Midlands as well as numerous other
commercial and industrial outlets. The second train will complete the
shuttle service south from the Humber Refinery to London. Eventually
each train will make a daily round trip to meet the demands for Conoco/
Jet products.
“What would you estimate is the value of one train’s cargo? At current
retail prices 300,000 gallons puts an approximate price tag of more
than £100,000 on the contents of each train.”
Meanwhile, community engagement was well underway. The newly-
formed Killingholme Entertainment Committee held a Miss Killingholme
contest. The winner was teenager Lesley Duggan who, alongside her
sash, won a make-up bag stashed with goodies. Her mum Kath worked
in the personnel department of the refinery.
Humber Refinery was not only a key industry player: it was fast playing
a positive part in the life of the residents who lived nearby.
