The year 1997 marked the 25th anniversary of gas production from the
Viking gas field, 86 miles off the Lincolnshire coast; Conoco’s first North
Sea discovery and its first gas production from the southern sector.
Construction of the Theddlethorpe terminal, built to handle gas from
the Viking field, began in 1970 and entered commercial production in
1972. Over the next 25 years, the field delivered 2.8 trillion cubic feet
of gas to the UK – enough to fuel the entire country’s homes, business
and public services for one year. Meanwhile, the terminal expanded
to handle gas transported ashore from 16 fields by four trunk pipeline
systems. To mark the milestone, Conoco donated a fully kitted out
village hall to Theddlethorpe.
Two years later, the terminal became the first Conoco installation
worldwide to achieve the European Union’s Eco-Management and
Auditing Scheme accreditation and registration. At the same time,
the refinery became Conoco’s first to achieve the international
environmental management standard ISO 14001.
Meanwhile, 1997 saw a 10-year £23 million project come to fruition.

generators, so the decision was made to make it self-sufficient in power.
