Thirty years on from opening, Humber Refinery was one of the world’s
major suppliers of high-grade premium coke, and processed 170,000
barrels of crude oil every day, producing 14 million litres of petrol a day,
which would have allowed a car doing 35-40 miles to the gallon to travel
around the world four times.
It served the UK and export markets well, providing a wide range of
products such as low benzene petrol, low sulphur diesel, industrial
and domestic heating oils and marine and aviation fuel, and specialist
products including industrial feedstocks like propylene and benzene.
The refinery also produced dimethyl ether aerosol propellant, an ozone-
friendly alternative to CFCs, and was also the largest manufacturer of
LPG.
The CV is impressive, and quite rightly so. In the last three decades,
it had processed 1.5 billion barrels of crude and other feedstocks,
produced 1.2 billion barrels of petrol and distillates and 14 million
tonnes of petroleum coke. The Humber Refinery remained a leader.
