Advanced control systems, though complex, were proving necessary for
refineries to remain competitive and, crucially, stay in business. Looking
to stay in the lead, Conoco had already begun to implement the next
level of control – multi-unit optimisation strategies.

A giant £1.4 million warehouse – deemed the Wembley Stadium of
coke storage because of its internal surface area of 7,900sm – opened
at Immingham Docks (pictured right). Before then, coke was kept in
warehouses around North Lincolnshire, away from the refinery. This
investment reduced costs and made logistical sense. It was built in
six months, using 4,400 cubic metres of concrete. Inside it measured
171m long and 58m at its widest point.

In August 1999, Turkey was rocked by a disastrous earthquake. It was
a tragedy of epic proportions; 17,000 people died in the 7.6 magnitude
quake, which lasted just 37 seconds.
