Simultaneously, Conoco also implemented its own apprenticeship
scheme, having previously sponsored traditional craft-based
apprentices through its site contractor. Contributions to the community
continued apace: for example, in 1997 it gave £13,000 to seven local
organisations as part of an ongoing scheme which has seen tens of
thousands of pounds donated to good causes in the area. Money was
given towards a new playground at Killingholme Primary School, a
village green centre in East Halton and a new four-lane running track at
            a sports centre in Immingham.

In the same year, it announced a three-year £10,000 sponsorship
package for the refurbishment of the observatory and facilities at
the Discovery Centre, an award-winning environmental attraction in
Cleethorpes from which the Tetney monobuoy is visible. The gift provided
a new high-powered telescope and upgrades to others, a wall-mounted
TV, a mural about wildlife in the estuary, an information board about
shipping, binoculars and interactive bird-watching and migration maps.
