Emancipation
                                                Proclamation Award

On Jan. 1, 1866, Montgomery began recognizing the Emancipation Proclamation, signed three years earlier
by President Abraham Lincoln to declare freedom for "all persons held as slaves."
Since that time, a celebration has been held every year on New Year’s Day in a local venue. This year, the
Emancipation Association chose to recognize the community service of the Montgomery (AL) Alumnae
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The recognition came as a result of the work done specifically
with the Political Awareness and Involvement Committee’s Rollin to the Polls initiative. Based on the
chapter’s efforts to inform, educate and coordinate the GOTV initiative, which has been recognized in the
city as well as around the country. The chapter’s work, commitment and dedication to our community
needs are being recognized. This recognition for the chapter is evidenced by the overwhelming support of
          donors and volunteers.

The award was received by President Cassandra E. Brown on behalf of the chapter. More than 30 sorors

attended the New Year’s day event at the historic First Baptist Church located at 374 N. Ripley Street.
