The Best Places to Tie the Knot

We have all heard the expres-
sion “Tying the knot,” and many
        have wondered where it originat-
ed. Tying the knot, also known as
        “the handfasting ceremony,” is an
ancient Celtic ritual in which some-
one ties the couple’s hands to-
gether using a cord or ribbon. The
        ceremony symbolizes that their
marriage is tied to each other for
        the rest of their lives.
           “The handfasting ceremony”
dates back as far back as 7000 B.C.
in ancient Ireland. It took place be-
fore the wedding and acted more
        as an engagement practice, lasting
a year before the actual wedding.
        This ceremony was performed to
        let potential suitors realize that
the woman was no longer avail-
        able. However, the wedding wasn’t
        guaranteed. They were to reassess
whether they wanted to marry at
the end of the year. If they decid-
ed they were not well suited they
could then move on in their search
        for another prospect to marry.
           With the average wedding
        costing around $35,000, most en-
gaged couples will do what they
can to defray costs. Most couples
would like to marry where they
live to make the event accessible to
family and friends. Of course, there
are those who prefer weddings to Getting Married in San Diego
