Biblical Witness on Jesus’ Authority

One of the characteristics of Jesus’ preaching is his authority. The Synoptic writers regard

Jesus’ exousia, a Greek term for authority, as “one of the key themes” of his ministry. When
the first three books of New Testament introduced Jesus’ public ministry, they started with the
depiction of Jesus’ proclaiming the Kingdom of God and the subsequent response of amazement
among the people at his authority.
When Mark witnesses Jesus’ preaching in the synagogue of Capernaum, he comments on the
amazement of the listeners: “They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one
