The Korean preacher should take up the role of a culture critic as seen in the role of a
prophet. In the past, an anthropocentric theology of preaching only served to advance privatism
in the Korean church. Due to a lopsided emphasis on the individual dimension of the Gospel, the
Korean church lost much of its social credibility, a significant factor in its previous phenominal
growth. At present there is a serous lack of prophetic preaching, that is, calling for the social
responsibility of the Church and each Christian. There is also tremendous need for prophetic
preaching concerning social ills like human rights, social morality, political and educational
justice, ecological equilibrium, and especially economic justice within Korean society. Through
prophetic preaching and sacrificial social service, the lost social credibility of the Korean church
can be restored. If Korean preachers seek to follow the role model of Jesus, they will take on the
role of social prophet in their preaching.
The role of a teacher in preaching has been a forte in the history of the Korean preaching.
Traditionally the major image and role of the Korean preacher was the teacher. The relationship
between preacher and congregation was that of a teacher and pupil. The present problem,
however, is the manner of teaching resident among the clergy. Abandoning traditional roots,
preaching drastically changed its context and was swept away by the current stream of
anthropocentrism. Korean preachers must take up again the ways of teaching in preaching as
modeled by Jesus, the master of communication. The next chapter will discuss Jesus’
communicative methodology.
