creating equity across all ELA classrooms.
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT:
The English Department has continued its work revising
programming and adjusting the curriculum to create
more inclusive and engaging learning environments for
all students. In all classrooms, we prioritize student
choice and empower students' voices to enhance
engagement and personalize learning. We have also
revitalized our curriculum to adjust pacing based on
recent changes to the school’s schedule, assess equity
and inclusivity in our content, and identify gaps and
areas for improvement in our scope and sequencing. In
addition to preparing students for MCAS in Grade 10 and
exams in AP Language and AP Literature, we are revising
all courses to incorporate more “Pre-AP” skills and
increase vertical alignment across all grade levels. This
will enhance critical thinking skills and communication
tools necessary for success in school and as productive
citizens in the community.
Outside of the classroom, the English Department
provides spaces that not only invite students to engage
more deeply with the content but also help them establish
relationships and actively participate in our school and the
larger community. Acknowledging student interest, we
have launched a Creative Writing Club and are building a
repertoire of ELA-centered enrichment opportunities to
integrate into Success blocks.
This year, we are furthering our initiative to increase
literacy through collaborative eforts with our
Curriculum Team and vertical alignment meetings with
Nichols Middle School. This ensures that our students
are building on their reading and writing skills. The
primary focus of our department time has been aligning
FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT:
The Fine Arts Department continues to provide
opportunities for our students to be creators, performers
and audience members both within the curriculum and
with co-curricular opportunities ater school. Participation
in the fine arts enables students to discover and develop
their own creative capacity, thereby providing a course of
lifelong enrichment. The program continues to grow ater
significant setbacks due to the pandemic. The long-term
impacts are still being felt at the high school level but there
has been significant growth in the feeder program over the
past two years.
