Unit 1 Hangul and Cia-Cia

Listening Comprehension

Many languages disappear because there are only a few people who speak the
language. Another reason is because there is no alphabet for the language. Cia-Cia,
the town language of Bau-Bau in Indonesia, was about to disappear, too. However,
people who wanted to preserve their language did research and decided to use Hangul
as their written alphabet. Now students learn their language with textbooks that use
Hangul. According to Indonesian teachers, Hangul is the perfect alphabet for Cia-Cia.
This is because Cia-Cia uses the same consonants and vowels as Hangul, though it
has a few extra sounds, too. In 2009, teachers began teaching Hangul to third-grade
students with textbooks that used Hangul in reading, writing, and speaking exercises.
Now that they have a written language, they will be able to do a lot of activities. They
can communicate with others in letters, newspapers, magazines, etc. They can also
publish books and develop their knowledge by reading them. Furthermore, they can
leave the culture and history of Cia-Cia speakers to later generations in the form of
writing. For this reason, Cia-Cia speakers are very grateful for Hangul.
