Unit 1 Let’s go, Birdy
Reading Comprehension
Hi! My name is Birdy. I am a bird. Every year, I move thousands of kilometers
with my family!
We move at two times of year –– in the spring and in the fall. In the fall, we fly
thousands of kilometers from north to south. Then we spend the winter in warm
places. We have more food there. Also, warm places are better to raise baby
birds. So, we go there to get food and have babies. I was also born in a warm
place. In the spring, we fly north again. It is warm again in the north. We can get
food in the north in summer.
When we fly thousands of kilometers, we fly in a “V” shape. Flying is much
easier with that shape. In that shape, we use less energy to fly. That is important
when we fly a very long way!
How can we find our road in the sky? We have a “compass” in our heads. It
uses the sun to find the road. We also use our noses. We smell the right places
to fly!
