A rate in which the second term is 1 is called a unit rate.
1. Find each unit rate. Now have students write a rate for each situation. When finding a unit
rate, one of the quantities must be 1.
1. Have students find the unit rate for each a. $38 for 4 liters b. 140 grams in 5 ounces
question. When finding the unit rate, one of unit rate: 140 140 5
5 5 5
the quantities must be 1. $38 = $38 4 = $9.50 unit rate: = = 28
4 4 4 1 1
Step 1: Divide the first quantity by the second $ 9.50 for 1 liter 28 grams in 1 ounce
quantity.
Step 2: Convert the fraction into a decimal.
Step 3: Write the correct units.
Refer to . c. 45 miles on 3 gallons d. 84 hits in 60 games
Example: If I walk 250 meter in four minutes, unit rate: 45 = 45 3 = 15 unit rate: 84 = 84 60 = 1.4
how many meters do I walk a minute? 3 3 3 1 60 60 60 1
Step 1: 250 15 miles on 1 gallon 1.4 hits in 1 game
4
Step 2: 250 67.5
4
Step 3: 67.5 meters in a minute e. 12 goals in 25 games f. $2.88 for 16 ounces
unit rate: 12 = 12 25 = 0.48 unit rate: 2.88 = 2.88 16 = 0.18
25 25 25 1 16 16 16 1
0.48 goals in 1 game $ 0.18 for 1 ounce
