Why does August have 31 days?
The Roman emperor Julius Caesar, who made the Julian calendar, changed the name of the 7th month to
July and increased the number of days to 31 by taking one day out of February. For similar reasons,
Caesar’s cousin Augustus changed the name of the 8th month to August and increased the number of days
to 31, taking another day out of February. Consequently, the calendar we use today has seven months with
31 days, and February has just 28 days. The authority of the emperors has passed down into the calendars
we use today.
