Unit 1 Ammonites

Listening Comprehension
Reporter: Hi! Welcome to “Shops Around Town!” Tonight, we’re at a fossil shop!
What is a fossil?
Clerk: A fossil is part of animals or plants from long ago. Those animals or plants
don’t live any more. When an animal or plant died, sand and mud covered it. Next,
the sand and mud turned into rock over many years. The animal parts turned to rock,
too. And we see the rock now. That’s a fossil.
Reporter: Oh, I see. Look at all the old fossils! Here’s a big one! It looks like a
sheep’s horn!
Clerk: That’s an ammonite! Ammonites lived in the sea about 65 million years ago.
Ammonites were like the squid today. But there is a difference between them.
Ammonites had shells. Squid do not have shells. Ammonites ate fish and other small
animals. Now people collect ammonite fossils because they are beautiful. So we sell
them here! Ammonite fossils are works of art, too!
Reporter: Thanks for your answers! And thank you for watching the show,
everyone. Join us next time for “Shops Around Town!”
