5. 요약 (Summary)
Carnet’s famous ―Address to the Slaves of the United States‖ urged American slaves
to fight against their masters. After a bloody and successful slave revolt in the French
colony of Haiti in 1791, southern slaveholders suppressed their slaves with harsher
methods. They cleverly used the Christian religion and the promise of salvation to
encourage their slaves to have more submissive attitudes. Also, marriage was an
important tool to make strong emotional bonds in slavery, which made slavers want
to stay with their family by obeying their masters. If slaves fought against their
masters with arms, slaveholders used brutal and public punishment or a slaughter in
order to discourage further acts of disobedience.
