Unit 1 Cuteness
Further evidence comes from the reactions of animals to cute babies which are not
theirs, or perhaps not even of the same species. There are many cases in which a cute animal
has been adopted by a mother from a different species. The most famous case may be that of
a female lab gorilla which adopted and cared for a small kitten. In humans, the same response
has been documented. Humans routinely adopt and care for cute animals. Furthermore,
psychological studies have shown that adults react more positively towards, and are more
likely to show concern for, babies that are considered cuter. Thus, cuteness is not simply an
opinion; it is an instinctive reaction that all of us share.
