12 Leagues and Tournaments
Basic Concepts Leagues and Tournaments
In a league, each team competes with all the other
teams once, and the winning team is determined by
the results. When teams participate in a league,
each team plays against 1 teams and each
match is played by 2 teams. Therefore, there will be
1 2 matches.
In a tournament, teams are paired up. They compete
with each other. The losing team from each match is
dropped from the tournament. The winning teams
continue to play against each other until only one
winning team is left. When there are teams
competing in a tournament, there is a total of ( 1)
match(es).
Example Five volleyball teams are participating in a competition. How many
days will it take to determine the winner if the competition is a
league and if it is a tournament?
