Basic Concepts Wins and Points

In games with no draws, one team wins and one teaml loses.
Number of matches Number of wins Number of losses.
Points that are awarded as the results of games are called points. A team
is awarded 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.

Example Four people, A, B, C, and D are in an arm-wrestling league. A
person is awarded 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0
points for a loss. At the end of the league, A has 3 points, B has 1
point, and C has 3 points. What is D’s win-loss record?

Class Notes

Four people are in a league. Therefore, there are 2 matches.

points are awarded for each match. Since there are 6 matches, there must be
points.

From the results, A, B, and C have 3 1 3 7 points. Therefore, D must have points.

D played matches. Therefore, D’s win-loss record is wins, losses,

and draws.

Try It Again Korea, Japan, USA, Cuba, and China competed in a baseball
league. Find Korea’s record.
