C USING COMPLEX SENTENCES

Using a series of short, simple sentences can make your writing sound
rough and chopped up. Sometimes you can combine ideas to create longer,
flowing sentences.
To do this, you may connect ideas with:
• TRANSITION WORD
• COMMA (,)
Here are some TRANSITION WORDS: and, or, but, because, so

EXAMPLE Look at the sentences below.
• Billy plays the guitar. Joe plays the guitar, too.

Billy and Joe play the guitar.
• We bought a car. It wasn’t new.
We bought a car, but it wasn’t new.
• Our teacher was absent. We did not have the test.
Our teacher was absent, so we did not have the test.
