Unit 1 READING 1
O ne of the most interesting planets
in the solar system is Saturn.
Saturn is famous for the enormous ice
rings that surround it. One can see them
through a telescope. It rotates on its
*axis faster than the earth does, so there
are only 11 hours a day on Saturn.
this, Saturn
is the second largest planet. It is so big that it weighs as much as 95 Earths!
Also, the center of (a) this planet is over 60,000 kilometers from the surface.
Despite (b) its enormous size, it could float on a big body of water! This is
because (c) this planet is made up mostly of gas. Though there is a solid
core, most of the planet is hydrogen, helium, and other gases. Also, the
planet has a very cold temperature, and (d) it can drop to 175 degrees
Celsius below freezing! This is because Saturn is so far from the sun. In fact,
it takes about 30 years to revolve around the sun.
* axis: the imaginary line around which a large round object turns
English Usage
• as much as : can be used before a number to mean ‘the large amount/
