R obots are becoming more and
more common in our
everyday lives. In fact, by the year
2015, it is estimated that sales of
personal robots will be four times
greater than (a) they are today.
One of the most popular personal
robots on the market is the robotic vacuum cleaner. (b) This device uses
sensors to drive itself around a room. (c) It knows where a wall or a piece of
furniture is, and can avoid it. Another popular household robot is the
robotic pet. Robots like the AiboTM look and act like real dogs. Microphones
let the Aibo “hear” commands from its master. A computer then translates

AiboTM can learn up to fifty new words and talk back to its master in its own
language. More surprising inventions are ahead. Soon, human-like robots
will be able to do chores around the house or take care of people who are
sick. Eventually, robot technology will change the way we live every day.
