Unit 3 READING 1

R obots are becoming more and
more common in our

everyday lives. In fact, by the year

2015, it is estimated that sales of

personal robots will be four times

greater than (a) they are today.

One of the most popular personal

robots on the market is the robotic vacuum cleaner. (b) This device uses

sensors to drive itself around a room. (c) It knows where a wall or a piece of

furniture is, and can avoid it. Another popular household robot is the

robotic pet. Robots like the AiboTM look and act like real dogs. Microphones

let the Aibo “hear” commands from its master. A computer then translates

(d) them into an action, like sitting or begging. ,

AiboTM can learn up to fifty new words and talk back to its master in its own

language. More surprising inventions are ahead. Soon, human-like robots

will be able to do chores around the house or take care of people who are

sick. Eventually, robot technology will change the way we live every day.
