Magic square
A magic square is an arrangement of numbers in a square grid, where
the numbers in each row, and in each column, and the numbers that
run diagonally in both directions, all add up to the same number.
About 4000 years ago, the magic square appeared in Chinese literature.
The legend of “Lo Shu” or “scroll of the river Lo”, explains how to
prevent the river from overflowing. But there was a huge turtle in the
river, and the turtle had patterns on his back. The people thought
about the patterns in various ways, and finally they expressed them as
numbers. People found that the sum of the numbers in each line was 15:
horizontal, vertical and diagonal were the same. Therefore they believed
that the magic pattern was a gift from a god to the people through the
turtle, and they regarded the numbers as precious.
