what you are writing about. Then your DETAILS tell more
about the MAIN IDEA. To find a MAIN IDEA, ask, “What’s the
point of this?”
EXAMPLE MAIN IDEA: 1 DETAILS: 2, 3, 4, 5
1. There are four stages in the life cycle of a butterfly.
2. The first stage is the egg.
3. The second stage is the caterpillar.
4. The next stage is the pupa.
5. The last stage is the beautiful adult butterfly.

1. Joey likes to help his dad every week with the lawn.
2. He picks up sticks in his yard.
3. Joey also rakes the grass into piles.
4. Sometimes he gets to ride the mower by himself.
