Key concepts

                                           • an ecosystem is an area where living and non-living things
depend on each other in many different ways
                                           • there are many different ecosystems such as rivers,
mountains, sea, rocky shore, ponds, wetlands, grasslands,
forests and deserts, which support different kinds of living
                                              things
                                           • in an ecosystem there are certain relationships between
                                              living things and non-living things
                                           • in an ecosystem plants and animals are connected by their
feeding relationships, called a food web
                                           • a food web consists of plants, animals and microorganisms

Activity 1 Tuning in: How are living and non-
                                                         living things connected?

                                                                                                Time: 45 minutes
                                         Objectives
By the end of the lesson learners should be able to:
Resources • Identify biotic and abiotic things
                                         • Understand how living and non-living things are connected
             • Biotic and abiotic • Understand how human being could impact on the relationship
playing cards between living things and non-living things
               (Note that these
               will also be used in
               Activity 3) Teacher guidelines

                                           Preparation before the lesson:
                                           1. You will need to create a set of biotic and abiotic playing
                                              cards:
On index cards you should paste pictures of living organisms
and non-living objects from a variety of locations and write
Useful Websites the name of the organism on the card as well. (These cards
should be organized by ecosystems. Each table will be given
http://safoodwebs. set of cards for a different ecosystem.) – see website for

examples with pictures of South African food webs and the
organisms found in them. The ecosystems given are Fynbos,
Nama Karoo, Succulent Karoo and Savanna. Each of the
foodwebs shown have 18 animals and plants.
In addition, the following abiotic factors will also need to
be written onto cards for the game. Each of these can be
written onto two cards, totaling another 18 cards:

                                               sunlight wind soil
                                               rain temperature nutrients
