Social Media Musings – Part III My Reflections on the Practice and Life
  Future of Law
In a world where many lawyers are working from home, how far off are we from having law firms assign tasks to attorneys in other states and even other countries to assist with research and writing, marketing, and business development projects?
Our current situation will press the accelerator on the use of tech by the legal field. More and more firms had been embracing legal tech. Now, all firms, whether ready or not, have been pushed into this brave new world - video conferences, remote hearings, depositions and mediations, social media marketing, virtual CLE and conferences. Once an industry commits to a new path, it rarely goes back.
Attorneys complain law school didn’t prepare them for the practice. What if law schools required their professors to have active practices and integrated their practices in their lectures? That may help making law school less theoretical and more practical.
Right now, there are entrepreneurs trying to disrupt the legal field the same way Uber disrupted taxis, AirBNB disrupted hotels and Netflix disrupted movie rentals.
Several leading health specialists have recommended that once we return to work and life returns to normal, we no longer shake hands. No hugs. No close contact. No shaking hands.
If that happens, isn’t it amazing to think how quickly social behaviors and actions can change. Our practice, our work, our relationships may all change, in small and big ways, permanently. It’s important to think through how we’ll all respond to these changes and address them.
