WABL 3x3 CLUB
CHAMPIONSHIPS
The WABL 3x3 Club Championship returned this year after a postponement in 2020 due to Covid. In 2021 we tried hosting the tournament in January during the school holiday period and outside of WABL season. We are continuing to build this brand and, again, an exciting tournament was delivered with excellent feedback received from competitors. Our aspiration is for this 3x3 tournament to become a feature on the calendar and to grow into a prestigious championship that more basketballers want to play in and every Association wants to win.
Nine different WABL Associations were represented at these Championships with a high performance team from the Kimberley also selected to attend. This builds on past successes, where we have used this tournament to provide regional representative opportunities to teams from the Mid-West and Great Southern, as well as sides representing the South West Slammers.
3x3 continues to be a popular format of the game amongst young girls and this year we added an U18 Girls competition to the program to cater for demand. Overall, we had slightly more girls’ teams register for these championships than boys’ teams, with participation rates amongst girls and boys hovering around the 50:50 mark. This points to a real opportunity that 3x3 potentially affords us, to attract and retain more women in our sport via a different format of the game.
