EQUIPMENT AND CURRICULUM
Both Christmas Island District High School and the Recreation Centre were provided with the Aussie Hoops and 3x3 curriculums ran during my visit, which consist of eight lessons each. A 3x3 Streetball kit (balls, bibs & on-line tournament draw/leader board/results tool) was provided to the school. Size 4 and 5 basketballs used for Aussie Hoops were also provided to both the school and the Recreation Centre.
3X3 STREETBALL IS THERE TO STAY
I have no doubt that 3x3 Streetball will likely be added as a new sporting option at Christmas Island District High School. Plans were already underway to run another tournament later this year to keep the momentum going. The view was that the school would add the sport to its programming & eventually look for 3x3 Streetball to move to become an after school activity conducted at the Recreation Centre on a regular basis.
3x3 Streetball was such a hit with everyone (kids and school staff) that initial discussions were also had on the potential, once the sport is up and running on a regular basis, to send Christmas Island 3x3 Streetball Representative Teams to the Basketball WA WABL 3x3 State Championships held in January each year. The Island is looking for more opportunities for kids to get outside the Island bubble, travel and have different experiences. The nature of 3x3 Streetball with only four players on a team makes it a viable option over other sports.
NEW DELIVERY MODEL FOR USE THE KIMBERLEY
Currently in the Kimberley we do not deliver in-school basketball programming. The experience on Christmas Island of having only a week to deliver in a school setting as much basketball as possible, to as many people as I could, along with how it was achieved and the fact that it was a huge success has shown what is possible in this space.
In communities across the Kimberley, where travel time/costs are huge and due to a lack of volunteers and/or willingness to run skill development type programs kids are missing out on basketball skill development, the option to conduct Aussie Hoops and 3x3 Streetball as per how it was conducted on Christmas Island could provide a great solution and ensure these communities are getting opportunities to access participation programming from the Basketball Australia Pathway. I will look to pilot a program based on the Christmas Island delivery model with Kununurra District High School in 2022.

ADULTS MENTORED 265
The similarities of Christmas Island and the
Kimberley, in regard to remoteness and challenges HOURS
to provide opportunities to kids was very apparent.
What was quite different though was the the
willingness of everyone (kids and adults) to 265 embrace the opportunity of what the visit brought
and fully immerse themselves in every activity
which was very refreshing. In the Kimberley we KIDS
work hard to provide opportunities and in a small ATTENDING way try to help change peoples lives for the better.
It's a hard gig and successes can be few and far
between. The way Christmas Island responded to
the visit was inspirational and helped fuel up the
vision to continue the work in the Kimberley.
Thank you to DLGSC and BWA for the opportunity and a huge thanks to the people of Christmas Island for their kindness, hospitality and appreciation.
