CHRISTMAS
“I have no doubt that 3x3 Streetball will likely be added as a new sporting option at Christmas Island District High School.”
AUSSIE HOOPS -
PRE-PRIMARY THROUGH YEAR 4
Aussie Hoops was a big hit - we had so much fun & even the unicorn enjoyed it. Seven sessions were conducted during the week.
Unfortunately the gear, including size 4 and5 basketballs used in Aussie Hoops did not arrive until after I had left the Island, so we had to use volleyballs and soft foam balls.
Quick Hands and Builders vs Bulldozers were the two most popular games. I loved how the school staff jumped right in to assist in the small sided games. They quickly picked up the teaching points and concepts of each drill and I have no doubt they will be able to run them in the future.
My highlight was the reaction of the Pre- Primary class when they were told I was flying home after their session on the Tuesday...hugs from everyone and even a few tears, which is always a good sign that the little ones were having fun!!
3x3 STREETBALL - YEAR 5 TO YEAR 11
To say 3x3 Streetball was a big hit is an understatement! Fifteen sessions were conducted during the week plus a four round eight team tournament.
The kids loved the small-sided games, which are so much fun they don't realise that they are drilling individual and team concepts, but it was the music that absolutely caused them to fall in love with this new form of basketball.
The tunes were pumping, the smiles were huge, 3x3 Streetball fever has gripped the Island!! Volleyball is the Island's current sport of choice but I think that's about to change!!
COACH MENTORING PROGRAM
A huge highlight from my perspective was the willingness of all the teachers, teachers aids, Recreation Center staff and young student leaders to jump on the court and assist with program delivery.
They really wanted to learn not just how the drills were conducted but also the teaching points and concepts that were the essence of each drill.
The way both the Aussie Hoops and 3x3 Streetball curriculums are presented aims to make it easy for people with little or no
basketball experience to quickly pickup and be in a position to not just run the programs but achieve their objectives. I received great feedback on the curriculums ease of use and this coming from people in the business of teaching...a big tick!!
3x3 STREETBALL TOURNAMENT
The Christmas Island District High School Multi-Purpose Courts become the 3x3 Streetball Coliseum during my visit. Over recess and/or lunch this was the place to be!!
We conducted 56 games with the eventual winners pictured to the right. All of this was completed in only two hours by two people, which makes the sport a great option for schools.
In 3x3 Streetball the kids are responsible for everything. They call their own fouls, keep their own score and if they can't agree on a violation its Paper, Scissors, Rock that determines the outcome of course!! If we ran out of time to play all the games, as a team/ teams weren't ready to play, the winner was decided the same way, so the improvement in the kid's organisational and negotiation skills was amazing!!
