 KIMBERLEY REGIONAL REFEREE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
In 2021 the Kimberley Region Referee Pathway was developed in a collaboration between the BWA Officials Development Manager and BWA Regional Development Manager Kimberley. The Pathway includes Participation, Development and High-Performance levels.
With no one in the region qualified to Coach Officials a locally based Level 1 Referee Anne Dann (Broome Basketball Association) was trained to take on the role of Kimberley Referee Coach. In late 2021 Anne started delivering the Development level of the Pathway, mentoring Green Shirt referees in order that they could work toward achieving their stripes. In 2022 programming will expand with the introduction of the High-Performance level & also a Participation Level targeting Remote Hoops Hubsand Youth Organisation Staff throughout Remote Communities who would like to use basketball as avehicle to engage kids through local basketball competitions.
KIMBERLEY ATHLETES PARTICIPATION IN BASKETBALL WA FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (FDP) AND EMERGING TALENT (ET) CAMPS IN PERTH
In early 2021 comprehensive changes were made to BWA’s Future Development & Emerging Talent Programs, that aim to bring the states very best young talent aged 12- 17 together for regular high-quality intensive training, from weekly sessions to camp-based delivery during each school holiday period. The new delivery model ensured the states actual ‘best of the best’ could participate, no matter where they live across Western Australia.
These changes allowed nine (9) different Kimberley High Performance Development Program athletes to travel to Perth & attend multiple camps throughout the year.
The impact of this opportunity has been significant on our Kimberley based athletes’ development & progress up the athlete pathway into State Performance Programs (SPP) & earning the right to Represent Western Australia at National Championships.
KIMBERLEY PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS (AUSSIE HOOPS & 3X3 STREETBALL)
In 2021 ten (10) Kimberley Communities ran either a multi-week Aussie Hoops (5–10-year old’s) and/or 3x3 Streetball (10–17-year old’s) Program – a record in our Region.
Also thanks to our collaboration with Garnduwa. An Aboriginal Sport & Recreation Organisation based in the Kimberley, a further 49 one-off “Come-try” sessions were also held across the Kimberley Region. Through the “Come-Try” sessions communities as remote as along the Gibb River Road, Kalumburu & Balgo in the Tanami Desert even get a chance to participate. This meant that hundreds of kids in every part of the Kimberley had the opportunity to jump on the Basketball Australia pathway and attend a formal, structured basketball skill development program right in their own community.
The 2021 our 3x3 Streetball Programs, who’s content is based on the WA Style of play curriculum, also doubled as our Kimberley High Performance Selection Trials. This change provided the opportunity for players across the whole Kimberley Region (All major Towns & multiple Remote Communities) aged 10-17 to be identified as having high performance potential & receive an invitation to join the Kimberley High Performance Development Squad & work to turn that potential into talent.
