PARTICIPATION REVIEW
FUELLING CHAMPIONS
SCHOOL SLAM SERIES
Basketball WA were fortunate enough to be able to deliver Terms 3 and 4 of the Fuelling Champions School Slam Series, post the Covid-19 lockdown period in 2020.
Predominately, the year 5 and 6 tournament focus was solely on participation and was aimed to work with local associations, venues and schools as an introductory program into basketball. The aim of the series is to create an inclusive, safe and fun environment for students to develop a keen interest in the sport.
Even with the cancellation of Terms 1 and 2, BWA were able to deliver ten School Slam Series events from as far north of Western Australia as Karratha and as far south as Busselton.
With limited number of events running in 2020, BWA was still able to capture over 1,300 students from 51 different schools. Female participation rates still remain one of the highest for any participation program with nearly half of all students being young girls.
The annual BWA Champions Cup Tournament took place in November 2020. The event brings together the most competitive schools from across all the series, in a winner takes all 1-day event.
Aranmore Catholic Primary took out the 2019 Girls competition and also won the 2020 Boys competition. With St Emilie’s Catholic College claiming victory in the girl’s competition.
