2019 NAIDOC Basketball Carnival
The 2019 Naidoc basketball carnival saw an increase of ten teams from the previous year which was due to Basketball WA engaging with our Indigenous community to form a Naidoc Patrons council. The council consisted of leaders from Boordiya Moort, Pioneers, Binar and Djooditj Basketball Academy.
The council enable Basketball WA to build stronger working relationships with our Indigenous basketball community and ensure the carnival aligned with the 2019 Naidoc mes- sage of ‘VOICE, TREATY, TRUTH’ – Let’s work together for a shared future.
A dynamic component on the day was the presentation of trophies held upstairs in the Ellis room at the Bendat Basketball Centre. The sig- nificance of this was the acknowledgement of country and culture and the opportunity to hear the story behind the wonderful carnival artwork by young Indigenous artist Angel Smith.
"The hand represents creating our own destiny, the ball represents the game we all love to play and the patterns coming from the basketball are paths for people to all come together, to one point for a community gathering for
basketball where we can have fun"
compete and support each other.

Basketball WA would like to acknowledge the support of the council for their time and cultural learning, the Commonwealth Bank, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Healthways, Reconciliation WA and the Wembley IGA.
