Basketball Kimberley
KIMBERLEY
2019 was another big year in the Kimberley! Two significant new partnerships were developed, which both will have a big Impact on the opportunities available for basketball lovers across the region.
Basketball Kimberley & Garnduwa, a long-standing
& respected Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Organisation based in the Kimberley, formalised
our partnership in 2019 by signing an MOU to guide both organisations toward collaborating in the most effective way possible to grow basketball across the region. Both Basketball Kimberley and Garnduwa strongly believe that sport has the power to change lives. Through this partnership we aim to have greater impact and deliver wider outcomes by working together to not only achieve our own strategic objectives but also assist in the delivery
of whole of government priorities relating to youth, health and indigenous advancement in our region.
A second key partnership formed in 2019 was with the Perth Redbacks Basketball Association. The Redbacks agreed to support Basketball Kimberley to reduce the cost of our Kimberley based players
and coaches to attend Basketball WA State Trials and other Perth-based Elite Programs. The Redbacks meet our participants at Perth airport and organise all transport to training camps, billeting ,meals etc while they are in Perth.
This partnership has proven over the past year to not only provide opportunities for more Kimberley based players to attend trials, by cutting travel costs, but also allowed both Kimberley kids & Redback’s fam- ilies to learn from each other and develop strong connections that are likely to last a lifetime.
In 2019 through this partnership the Redback’s family has also donated large numbers of shoes, balls and other basketball items, to be distributed to Kimberley players in need of gear, so they have all the tools they need to chase their basketball dreams. We
are so humbled by the generosity of the Redbacks family to our region and look forward to working to- gether for many years to come to make basketball dreams come true.
REMOTE HOOPS HUBS
In 2019 , after two years in operation, our Remote Hoops Hub Program, which works to assist remote communities who love their basketball to build local capacity, competence & confidence in order that they can work toward creating a local basketball association, has shown its effectiveness with both the Halls Creek & Kununurra Remote Hoops Hubs becoming incorporated organisations & affiliating with Basketball WA. This is a huge acheivement for both communities who now can provide opportu- nities never previously available to their members, such as attending BWA Country Championships & Elite Developmnet Programs.
The Looma & Wyndham Remote Hoops Hubs, who last year where trained and mentored to deliv-
er their own Aussie Hoops Programs to kids aged 5-10, added a second program in 2019 offering 3x3 Streetball. These sites are now able to give kids aged 5-15 opportunities to play our great sport in their local community.
Two brand new Remote Hoops Hubs were also established this year in Warmun & Bidyadanga. The Warmun Hub Recruited and trained 14 locals as Aussie Hoops Coaches and held the communities first ever formal basketball Program (Aussie Hoops) in 2019.
Bidyadanga held a Community Meeting late in 2019 to discuss the possibility of becoming a Remote Hoops Hub. All in attendance supported this new venture and were extremely excited about the opportunity it would bring to take Bidy's love of basketball to the next level.
Through our Remote Hoops Hub program over 850 contacts (opportunities to influence through basketball) were made with remote Kimberley Kids in 2019.
In total the Kimberley region now has 5 incorporat- ed and Basketball WA affiliated Basketball Associations and 4 Remote Hoops Hubs giving unprecedented access to the Basketball Australia Pathway across our region.
