 Basketball Pilbara PILBARA
2019 was a really great year for the Pilbara region. Basketball WA appointed its first ever Pilbara Regional Development Officer – Samantha Dell’orso.
Having a Development Officer on the ground enabled us to better engage with our local Associations and remote communities as well as explore new and exciting ways to increase Basketball participation and youth engagement across the region.
AUSSIE HOOPS PROGRAMS
For the first time in the Pilbara we were able to set up the Aussie Hoops programs in all 5 of our local Associations. This included Karratha, Tom Price, Port Hedland, Wickham and Paraburdoo (our newest 2019 Association). We were also able to create an Aussie Hoops program in smaller communities such as Roebourne allowing for further indigenous participation. With the support and assistance from local stakeholders, volunteers and parents these introductory programs were highly successful in continuing to grow the sport and increase numbers into local competitions.
PILBARA PERFORMANCE PROGRAM (PPP)
The Pilbara Performance Program (PPP) was established in the Pilbara region in 2019, the first ever high-performance program within Pilbara region. The growth of associations such as Karratha (fastest growing association in WA) enabled the development of this program. The PPP was aimed at giving Pilbara athletes the opportunity for a pathway into the State Performance Program (SPP) & Southern Cross Challenge (SCC). The PPP consisted of 32 athletes selected from the Pilbara region and 10 network coaches who were mentored and upskilled at each of the fortnightly
2 hour sessions and 2 x 2 day camps from August through to December 2019.
The PPP program was a great introductory platform to educate, develop and enable PPP athletes the tools and resources to perform at their peak and take their playing careers to that next level.
The PPP focussed on the following areas:
• Time management
• How to managing stress
• Nutritional guidance and education on food
preparation
• Strength & Conditioning Programs (at home and
at the courts)
• Injury prevention (body movement control &
movement stretches before and after sessions).
We are very proud to say we had 8 PPP athletes selected in a SCC or SPP squad or team in
2019/2020, which sets a great foundation for increasing numbers in the 2020/2021 season.
PILBARA CLASSIC
The first ever North West Regional tournament (“The Pilbara Classic”) was held across Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th of October. The tournament incorporated exhibition games between associations, a 3x3 tournament and coaching and referee accreditation workshops.
On the Friday the exhibition matches were held between associations. All teams played one another, the age groups ranging from U14’s Boys & Girls to U18’s Boys & Girls. From these exhibition matches an All-Star Pilbara Fab 5 team was talent identified in both the Girls & Boys.
Following the conclusion of the exhibition matches, the coaching and referee workshops were held. The region now has a further 25 accredited coaches and 17 accredited referees.
On the Saturday we conducted the first ever 3 x 3 regional tournament, this attracted teams from all over the Pilbara. The 3x3 tournament had 27 teams participate which reflected a total of 87 athletes.
The “Inaugural Pilbara Classic” has been considered a huge success given participation, media cover- age and the identification of talent. We can’t wait to build on this success in 2020.
SCHOOL SLAM SERIES
In November, Karratha hosted the 2019 School Slam Series, we attracted 6 Primary schools from the City of Karratha. Further inland Paraburdoo hosted their first ever school slam series which included 3 primary schools (Paraburdoo, Tom Price and North Tom Price). The school slam series gained great coverage and positive feedback.
At Basketball WA we hope to use this opportunity to develop these young athletes and lead them into the local Associations as well as talent identify for pathway programs such as the U12 Hotshots & Southern Cross Challenge (SCC).
